These are the days of the week

It's time for the introduction of a running segment I'm going to call: Observations I've Made Regarding Differences Between Israel And The United States. This week, we'll discuss the Israeli days of the week versus the American days of the week. Let's get started, shall we?

In the United States, as I'm sure most of you know:

Monday = sucks, the start of the work week, maybe wind down with a beer at The General at the end of the night.
Tuesday = sucks, because there are 3 more days until Friday (and if you're Doug or Alaina you cry because Gilmore girls is off the air)
Wednesday = LOST
Thursday = "Thirsty Thursday," college kids and young folk everywhere go out at night because it's okay to be a little "tired" at work for just one day. Plus, you can always catch up on sleep over the weekend. Also, NBC's Thursday Night Done Right (TM).
Friday = Casual Friday, Bagels at work??, Go out at night, partay. Friday Night Lights! Smallville! (I'm actually not sure on that one. Mad Dog, is Smallville still on the air? If so, what's going on in the show? Feel free to leave a lengthy comment.)
Saturday = Get lunch at Panera with Max, more partying.
Sunday = Lazy Sunday, watch DVRed Saturday Night Live.

In Israel, however, things work a little differently, with Shabbat, the day of rest between sunset Friday and sunset Saturday, really shaping the week. Here are the key differences:

Sunday = Monday = sucks. start of work week.
Thursday = Friday + time to download and watch LOST.
Friday = During the day, it's like Saturday (no school/work), but everything closes at 3 PM (read that article I linked to). Also, the buses stop running, so you'd better be where you want to be.
Saturday = Sort of like Sunday, except everything's closed. Buses start running after sunset, some shops, restaurants, and bars (but not all - Jerusalem remains a ghost town) open up.

Hope that clears everything up! Byeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

  1. So, I'm curious Sam. If the buses stop running at 3p.m. on Friday as Shabbat approaches, how did you and Justin get to Tel Aviv for Friday night partying?

  3. Smallville is still on the air, but on Thursday nights. It's also still fantastic even though every single episode ends the same way. If only every one of my days ended with a life lesson about friendship, love, or moral obligations. Maybe I'd be a decent person?
